Network Rx: How to...?

Maintaining your business with the speed at which technology moves is an arduous task that is critical to business growth. Why waste your time trying to determine how your solution works when you could be focusing on the business?

With any technology solution, regardless of the amount of resources provided, additional support and service is required. Generally, if one customer has a question, the same issue will arise soon thereafter.

HP ProCurve Networking is dedicated to not only providing best-in-class standard based networking solutions but also in providing the services and support necessary to meet business needs. In an effort to ensure HP ProCurve is serving our customers with high quality and service, ProCurve asks the experts to answer 5 common questions from current HP ProCurve customers.

Question: Does HP ProCurve support ECMP with multiple Default Route Statements? I want to use two default routes to two different routers upstream and get the ECMP benefit.

Answer: At this time, it is not possible to configure Equal Cost Multipath with multiple default routes. The HP ProCurve Switch Series 5400zl does support ECMP with static routes, but as always, there can only be one default route. Any secondary default route that is configured is purely for backup. The same applies to every other HP ProCurve product that supports ECMP.

Please refer to the Multicast and Routing Guide for more information.

Question: Can I put an HP ProCurve switch’s IP address in a VLAN other than VLAN 1 for management?

Answer: You can manage your HP ProCurve Switch 5412zl from a VLAN interface with an IP address provided that you have an appropriately-addressed client assigned as a member of the VLAN in question.

Please consult the product's Management and Configuration Guide for more information.

Question: I try to connect the ProCurve Switch 2626 by using hepertermina, but it can't connect. What are the configurations needed to establish the connection (bit/sec, flow control etc.)?

Answer: The console settings recommended for use in establishing a serial console session with the HP ProCurve Switch 2626 are:

Baud: 9600 bps
Data Bits: 8
Stop bits: 1
Parity:  None
Flow Control:  Xon/Xoff
In addition, please be sure that you are using the serial console cable provided with the switch (part number 5184-1894), and that the terminal emulator you wish to use is VT100-compliant.
Question: We have purchased an HP ProCurve 8212zl with ofc and Ethernet ports. We have 8 departments and each department resides in and individual VLAN, with separate VLANs for voice, management and the web. Our edge switches include the HP ProCurve Switch 2650, HP ProCurve Switch 2126PWR, The HP ProCurve Switch 2626, and the HP ProCurve Switch 2610. Currently we are using the HP ProCurve 3500 Switch at the core with 2 data and voice VLANs, and Windows 2003 as the DHCP server. Can you help me in configuring the new switch (8212zl) with individual VLANs?

Answer: HP ProCurve Networking has prepared a few printed resources to help you plan a successful VLAN deployment. To begin, we recommend referring to Chapter 2 of the Advanced Traffic Management Guide. In addition, resources have been published for your use within the Ask ProCurve Knowledgebase:

These guides will help you determine when it is appropriate to Tag ports within a VLAN, and how VLANs work to separate network traffic into separate IP broadcast domains.  As you know, it will be necessary to provision a router if multiple VLANs shall communicate with one another.

Question: What is the best way to configure the HP ProCurve 2910al Switch for a VMware cluster with VMs separated on VLANs? Currently I have all ports untagged in one VLAN and all VMs have IP addresses in a single subnet.

Answer: In provisioning the 2910al switch for operation in tandem with a VMware cluster, we recommend referring to Best Practice Guides and documentation provided by VMware.  Their website may be found at www.vmware.com.

Once you are familiar with VMware’s expectations in regards to allocating different Virtual Machines on different subnets, then you will know whether the machines should be tagged or untagged within the switch, and you will have a better idea of the VLAN names and port assignments you wish to configure within the switch.  Once this is established, please refer to Chapter 2 of the Advanced Traffic Management Guide for the HP ProCurve Switch 2910al Series.
